In our new series, Beerknews Q&A, we want to help you Beerknurds get to know the beer experts at the helm of your local Flying Saucer. These folks can educate you about craft beer and find that next brew you’ll fall in love with.
Today, we’re getting to know Marc “MAC” Castaldo, Flying Saucer Beer Czar and GM of our Fort Worth location.
Beerknews Q & A: Marc Castaldo
How long have you been into craft beer?
My pops always drank Budweiser, so that was obviously my first beer. In the late ’80s, my best friend’s dad drank Sam Adams Boston Lager, and it made me realize there was way more depth to beer. I dabbled with Bass, Newcastle and Guinness for a while. By the time I came on board with Flying Saucer in June of 1996, I was a full-blown beer snob and haven’t looked back. I did name my first dog — a Dalmatian — Budweiser, however.
What was your “a-ha” craft beer moment?
Sam Adams Boston Lager. Gotta be honest. It was around back in the day before “craft beer” was a thing.
What do you love most about craft beer?
The people make the culture. They’re the coolest, kindest, weirdest, smartest, craziest — I could go on — people I know.
What is your all-time favorite craft beer?
SKA Modus Hoperandi. I’ll be buried with a six-pack.
Who are your craft beer heroes? Who should beer lovers know about?
Well, like I said, the people who make up the industry are pretty rad. I probably have too many to list, but it’s safe to say I’ve got some great stories to tell about some really great times with really great people. I’m probably better at sharing those stories in person after a couple beers.
What makes Flying Saucer so great?
I think I’m a little biased after 20 years, but I’d say our Beerknurds take that honor.
Who (living, dead, real or fictional) would you share a beer with and why?
This is the part where I’m supposed to sound clever and wise, but I’d share one with anyone who loves beer and great company.
Anything else you want to share about yourself?
I’d rather hear more about you. Can I buy you a beer?
