How many breweries are there in the United States?

Written by: Andy Cope

2015 was an amazing year of growth for beer. It’s no longer news to discuss the ridiculous rate at which the American beer industry continues to grow, driven by the craft beer explosion. But just how fast is beer—craft beer in particular—growing?

Maui Brewing Co.’s Garret Marrero gave the stat that there’s a new brewery opening every 14 hours. Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione told us there’s 1.7 new breweries opening each day. According to the Brewers Association, there were 2,403 breweries (2,347 considered craft) in 2012, 3,464 (3,418 considered craft) in 2014 and increasing sales volume of 18 percent. Only 46 breweries have closed over the last year. Think room is running out for new breweries? Think again.

The Brewers Association has released that the United States finally broke the record mark of 4,131 breweries—a record set in 1873. As of the end of November 2015, there were a record 4,144 breweries in the United States. Amazing, right? Now, consider that there are more than 1,800 breweries set to open in the coming months. One out of every 10 beers sold in this country is a craft beer, and that’s sure to increase. Craft beer is growing so fast that can manufacturers are turning away business.

So, what does the future hold for craft beer? We’ve covered that. However, you can bet that Beerknews will keep you updated on what’s happening. You can also trust Flying Saucer will always be there to offer you the best the craft world can produce. Until then, enjoy the Brewers Association’s slideshow on the growth of beer in America.

Thanks for supporting craft beer. Cheers to an amazing 2015, and to an even better 2016!
