Flying Saucer Sierra Nevada California Camp Fire Relief

Beerknurds raise $39,000 for California Camp Fire victims

Written by: Andy Cope

Thanks to the help of generous, compassionate, and thirsty Beerknurds, Flying Saucer Draught Emporium was able to send a $39,192.85 check to the Sierra Nevada Camp Fire Relief Fund. And most of that money was raised by Beerknurds simply drinking Sierra Nevada beers.

Sierra Nevada Camp Fire Relief Fund

The Sierra Nevada Camp Fire Relief Fund was established by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. while the fires were still raging. Money in the fund will be distributed to “partner organizations that are dedicated to rebuilding and supporting the communities that have been affected.”

Shortly after the fires erupted in November 2018, Ken Grossman (Founder of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.) and his brewery announced that they were creating the Relief Fund with $100,000 of their own seed money. As undying fans of the craft beer titan, we wanted to do what we could to help. So, the Flying Saucer Wildfire Relief Drive was launched where $1 of every Sierra Nevada draft was collected to be donated. In addition, each Flying Saucer location raised additional funds through their own creative methods such as prize raffles and auctions.

“It’s been a really challenging situation for the foothill communities and the entire region. Your generosity is truly amazing. Thanks to you and the entire Flying Saucer team!” wrote Ken Grossman in an email of thanks to everyone who contributed.

Camp Fire: Damage and Moving Forward

The Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the history of California – and it was all in Sierra Nevada’s backyard. As of publishing, the fire has claimed 86 lives, many are still missing, displaced hundreds, and destroyed approximately 19,000 structures. The Chico brewery facility was forced to shut down operations for several days for the safety of its employees.

There’s still a long road ahead for so very many and still an opportunity for us all to pitch in. Breweries across the country mobilized after Sierra Nevada put out the call for help brewing their Resilience Butte County Proud IPA. More than 1,200 breweries are brewing the same recipe with 100% of proceeds directly supporting those in need.

We can’t thank you Beerknurds enough. Between this and the more than $48,000 you helped raise for Hurricane Harvey Relief, we are overwhelmed by your generosity. You make us so proud. Thank you so much! Cheers!
