Wicked Weed AB-InBev Buyout

Wicked Weed Brewing Gets Plucked by AB-InBEV

Written by: Andy Cope

BREAKING NEWS this morning as it’s been announced that North Carolina craft brewery, Wicked Weed Brewing, has been purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev. This, the first purchase of 2017 by AB-InBev, strikes hard at the hearts of us Beerknurds who live and die for independent craft beer.

In a statement released early May 3rd, Wicked Weed announced the news, saying:

“This is an exciting time for the entire brewing team,” said co-founder Walt Dickinson. “Our ability to create a wide range of really well executed beers that are focused on creativity, quality and drinkability is what makes Wicked Weed great. We have chosen to partner with The High End to position ourselves to make Wicked Weed what we imagined it could be when we first sat at a craft beer bar and talked about opening a brewery. As a brewer, giving our team more resources to continue innovating our portfolio and the ability to reach more craft drinkers, allows us to keep putting the beer and the people first.”

The brewery, a favorite offering at many Flying Saucers (especially Raleigh Flying Saucer and Charlotte Flying Saucer), had worked hard to expand to four different production facilities — including two souring facilities — since being founded in 2012. Their portfolio of really creative beers ranges from hop-forward, West Coast IPAs to barrel-aged sours. But whose portfolio doesn’t include those these days? The difference is Walt Dickinson, Luke Dickinson, Ryan Guthy, Rick Guthy, and Denise Guthy (Wicked Weed founders and owners) all brought the fire, had that something that made beer lovers sit up and pay attention, and were a part of the spirit that carries independent craft beer.

Wicked Weed posted this on their Facebook page:

In response to the news, Flying Saucer Beer Director Marc Castaldo had this to say:

“Keep calm and drink conscientiously. I’ve been battling the AB-InBev S.P.E.C.T.R.E since 1996. [It] Broke my heart when they bought Red Hook, slayed me when Miller bought and killed Celis (I shared beers with with Pierre [Celis], more than once), the GI [Goose Island] sale, the Karbach sale, everyone between and those to come all scars on my heart. There are still plenty of fighters out there. I’ll drink a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale today…you should too.”

The sale still needs to go through an approvals process by the U.S. Department of Justice before being made official. However, it looks like AB-InBev, which purchased SABMiller in 2015, has its tenth craft brewery and now pretty much has craft outposts spread from sea to shining sea. Everyone had their guesses as to who would be the next to succumb to AB-InBev’s mountain of cash, turns out Wicked Weed was the one ready to be plucked.

Shakespeare’s Juliet said “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” And, while a Wicked Weed brewed by AB-InBev will probably taste the same as an independently brewed Wicked Weed, it just won’t actually be the same. And therein lies the rub. Therein holds the essence and the roots of craft beer. It’s something that is hard to keep a firm grasp on in today’s world, even for the best of the best operators. It’s a way of thinking and a more thoughtful approach to craft beer. It’s the Flying Saucer mission. And it’s where we’re headed: a path towards transcendence and craft beer enlightenment. Stay tuned…

“Asheville has been our home for almost thirty years, and we believe this partnership will benefit our entire community, which has a deeply rooted passion for beer,” added co-founder Rick Guthy. “With our team’s heightened ability to innovate our hoppy and sour styles using the highest-quality ingredients around, we hope more and more beer drinkers will flock to Asheville to taste what we have to offer. Our pub and Funkatorium will stay focused on producing creative beers and will be part of Asheville’s beer tourism for years to come.”

“We are excited to welcome Walt, Luke, Ryan, Rick, Denise, and the entire Wicked Weed team into our High End family, said Felipe Szpigel, president, The High End. “It’s clear to me Wicked Weed is redefining what sophistication in beer can mean, with their amazing offerings being relevant in a wide variety of occasions. Their ability to brew the highest quality beers, in a variety of styles, along with their exciting barrel program, leads me to be optimistic about what our futures hold together.”

Anheuser-Busch’s partnership with Wicked Weed is subject to regulatory approval. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
