big game Super Bowl beer

What We’re Drinking For Big Game 51

Written by: Andy Cope

Who are you cheering for in the Big Game down in Houston? More importantly, what are doing for the game and what are you drinking? We asked some of the finest Flying Saucer minds (along with the even finer Beerknurd minds) where they’re pledging their beering and cheering allegiance and what they’re doing for the game.

Gabe Nissen – Lake Flying Saucer Manager

Gabe Nissen Lake Flying Saucer Garland Super Bowl

What’s your beer pick?

Sweetwater 420 Pale out of Atlanta, Georgia. I picked it for two reasons:

  1. Overall deliciousness. A glorious amount of citrus and pine with an easy drinking but sharp finish. The type of beer you could spend four quarters of football drinking.
  2. Both the Super Bowl and 420 make us picture one thing. Snacks! After beer, snacks are our favorite!

Pick to win the game:

Atlanta Falcons. Deep down, we still believe that the best offense is a good defense. Atlanta already has a solid offense, but their defense is top notch.

What’s happening at Lake Flying Saucer?

We’re having our Superb Owl Big Game Chili Cook Off. Think your chili recipe is the best? This is your chance to prove it. Competition starts at 3pm and then, during the game we’ll be cheering and drinking $3 Texas brews.

Kim Miller – Raleigh Flying Saucer Manager

Kim Raleigh Flying Saucer Super Bowl

What’s your beer pick?

Allagash Curieux from Maine’s Allagash Brewing Company. The barrel aging brings out delicious notes of coconut, vanilla, and bourbon making it so smooth. (Just like when Tom throws the football)

Pick to win the game:

The Patriots, obviously, because Belichick is the man.

What’s happening at Raleigh Flying Saucer?

Join us Saturday for Barleywine and Swine. Get your Big Game grub on in advance with awesome Barleywine Flights paired with BBQ styles from the east, west, South Carolina and Memphis. The game will be on, we’ll be cheering, serving great food and $3 North Carolina pints!

Jim Carr, Annie Sales and Anna Laurence – Flying Saucer Kansas City Beertender and Beer Goddesses

Kansas City Flying Saucer Super Bowl

What’s your beer pick?

We don’t get any Georgia beer here, we poured ourselves a Missouri/ Kansas beer flight and went off to pout as we are being bombarded with Super Bowl talking heads.

Pick to win the game:

Kansas City picks neither. If forced to pick, Annie, Jim, Anna, and I all agree that we wouldn’t mind beating the Falcons again.

What’s happening at Kansas City Flying Saucer? Well, the Chiefs didn’t make it to the Big Game, but we’re going to celebrate all weekend long anyway. That’s why we’re throwing the Should Have Been Us Superb Owl Weekend. We’re pairing chili and beer all weekend as the game happens without us. Come enjoy both Saturday and Sunday. We’ll have the game on Sunday and a full tap wall to drown our sorrow.

Cesar Covarrubias – Charlotte Flying Saucer Beerknurd

Cesar Covarrubias Charlotte Flying Saucer Big Game

Cesar is the plate leader in Charlotte, NC with 34 collective plates!

What your beer pick?

The rare offering of Sam Adams Utopias prior to heading out to Houston to watch the Super Bowl in person.

Pick to win the game:

I’m predicting another Patriots Super Bowl win while sitting just a few rows back from the action.

Cheers to you, Cesar! Have a great time and go check out the Houston Flying Saucer!

What’s happening at Charlotte Flying Saucer?

Amanda Smith – Flying Saucer Beer Goddess

Amanda Smith Fort Worth Flying Saucer Super Bowl

What’s your beer pick?

The Good, The Bad, and the Unidragon out of Ipswich, Massachusetts. This uncommon brew is sold only in Texas, and is brewed with Texas sourced smoked malts. This Russian Imperial Stout’s distinctive smoky aroma is followed by the flavors of roasted malts, cherry, cocoa nips and a bit of roasted coffee.

Pick to win the game:

I’m rooting for the New England Patriots to win the this Sunday!

What’s happening at Fort Worth Flying Saucer?

We’re focusing on the pregame with our Paper Football Tourney and specials. Flickoff is at noon, so make sure your fingers are nice and limber. We’re playing for bragging rights and great prizes from Rahr and Sons, one of Texas’ best breweries. So, come out and have fun and enjoy a couple of great beers before the game — no matter where you’re watching. We’ll have the TVs on, free swag, food and beer specials for everyone during the game.

Lyndsay Eliot – Fort Worth Beer Goddess

What’s your beer pick?

Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale out of Atlanta. It hits piney and lemony on the nose, followed by very ripe grapefruit, lime, coriander and salty cracker flavors. Perfect for enjoying all throughout the biggest of Sundays.

Pick to win the game:

I think the Falcons are going to beat the Patriots this Sunday.

Stephanie Flores and Katie Cruse – San Antonio Flying Saucer Beer Goddess and GM

san antonio flying saucer super bowl stephanie flores katie cruse

What are your beer picks?

Katie is choosing Atlanta’s Sweetwater Squeeze Box IPA and Stephanie is choosing their Georgia Brown Brown Ale. The Squeeze Box is citrusy with nice tropical hops and a good amount of grapefruit to keep your mouth excited for the game. The Georgia Brown is a yummy Brown Ale with toffee, caramel and chocolate notes that keeps you interested throughout the game without blowing out your palate.

Pick to win the game:

Both rooting for the Falcons cause the Cowboys didn’t make it. And the other option is the Patriots and well that’s just not an option.

What’s happening at San Antonio Flying Saucer?

Come watch the game while enjoying $3 Texas pints, $2 Houston pints and $0.50 wings (dine-in only). Impress us all with your football knowledge and most closely guess the final score of the game to win a $25 gift card.

Brittany and Sydnie – Cordova Flying Saucer Beer Goddesses

Cordova Flying Saucer Super Bowl

What are your beer picks?

SweetWater Squeezebox IPA and Terrapin Moohoo Chocolate Milk Stout are their beers of choice for game time. Originating from the Falcons’ home state, these breweries are sure to match them in the Big Game with winning statuses!

Pick to win the game:

Brittany and Sydnie say they don’t believe in deflating footballs. These two cuties are yelling “Go Falcons!”

What’s happening at Cordova Flying Saucer?

Join Brittany and Sydnie to support Atlanta or gather any New England fans to come cheer while we watch the game. Enjoy $3 pints, Halftime NFL Trivia and sweet giveaways.

Derin and Tasha – Addison Flying Saucer Manager and Beer Goddess

addison flying saucer super bowl

What are your beer picks?

Tasha is drinking SweetWater Hash Session IPA from Atlanta, which is a mellow IPA at 4.2% with some blazin’ Amarillo hops. Derin’s drinking the Clown Shoes Whammy Bar 2.0 from Ipswich, Massachusetts with some tasty Galaxy, Vic’s Secret and Ella hops.

Pick to win the game:

Tasha is picking the Falcons because of 420 (we assume SweetWater’s 420?) and Derin picks the Patriots because as a Saints fan he absolutely loathes the Falcons!

What’s happening at Addison Flying Saucer?

Get your Big Game Sunday started with us. Let us be your pregame HQ. Come fill your growler, get some party trays to go or grab a few pints. OR claim your table and enjoy the game with us! Enjoy $3 Texas pints all day, and $2 Real Ale Firemans #4, and $2 St. Arnold’s during the game.

Charles Porretto – Flying Saucer Art Director

Flying Saucer Super Bowl

What’s your beer pick?

My pick is Allagash Tripel out of Maine. We need it in Texas, like, yesterday.

Pick to win the game:

As far as a Super Bow—er—I mean BIG GAME pick, I choose the Patriots, because I cannot suffer the Atlanta Falcons to ever possess a Lombardy Trophy. Who Dat?

Joshua Justice – Houston Flying Saucer Manager

Houston Flying Saucer Joshua Justice Super Bowl

Josh shipping 4 cases of Trillium and other New England beer back to Texas.

What’s your beer pick?

Trillium Double Dry Hopped Fort Point from Boston, Massachusetts. I think this beer represents the best of what’s going on in New England on the IPA front without delving too far into the “juicy” trend. Big, tropical guava and pineapple aromas with aggressive resin bitterness. An ode to old school west coast, done up new school. Trillium’s tiny original storefront on the water in Boston is an absolute must visit spot for craft beer fans. Want to sit and enjoy one? Row 34 right next door is an excellent raw bar and craft beer spot. Walk down the block to The Institute of Contemporary Art and you’ve got yourself an afternoon.

Pick to win the game:

I think the Falcons come out shooting and win by 6.
